Commonwealth Business Forum 2013

The Commonwealth Business Forum (CBF) will take place in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 12-14 November 2013 in conjunction with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The Forum is the premier business event in the Commonwealth bringing together Heads of Government, Ministers, and top business leaders from around the world and will be attended by over a thousand delegates.

The CBF is co-organised by the Commonwealth Business Council (CBC) and the Government of Sri Lanka and forms a part of the overall CHOGM programme.  It will provide a valuable opportunity for high level dialogue on trade and investment between business and government leaders from the Commonwealth and beyond. The Forum will be opened by the President of Sri Lanka, and will be addressed by Commonwealth Heads of Government.

The CBF is a major global business event, coming at a critical time as the developed world continues its efforts to secure recovery from recession, tackle the challenges of maintaining open markets, and when emerging markets are enjoying a greater prominence on the world stage than ever before. The Forum will be a key event in developing stronger partnerships between governments and business to ensure that the Commonwealth plays its part in promoting sustainable growth to the benefit of the whole of global society.

Peter Kieran is the President of CPCS, a speciality firm providing strategic advisory services in transportation, energy and urban development. 

Since 1990, Peter has been working with international financial institutions, as well numerous governments, to develop new approaches to structural reform and encouragement of private investment in power and other critical infrastructure.  He has provided policy direction to national governments in over 25 countries on infrastructure.

Peter has been responsible for leading large multi-disciplinary teams responsible for the successful private investment in railways and ports in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, Congo Brazzaville, Cameroon, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, Madagascar, Jordan and Armenia.

His most current major accomplishment is the successful privatization of the entire publicly owned power sector in Nigeria.  CPCS is the lead transaction advisor for the sale of two hydro-electric companies, four existing gas-fired generating companies and eleven regional electricity distribution companies.  The transactions closed on schedule in August 2013 generating proceeds of over $2.6 billion dollars for the government and commitments for new investment of a further $3.0 billion.

CPCS is also the lead transaction advisor for the sale of ten brand new gas-fired generating companies constructed under the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP).  Eighty-two consortia have been shortlisted and bids are due in November 2013.  The total expected value of the transactions is approximately $8 billion.

Peter holds a degree in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto and an MBA from Harvard University.

Ravi Mehrotra, CBE

A marine engineer by training, Ravi Mehrotra quickly rose through the ranks at the Shipping Corporation of India, holding various senior positions including secondment at Managing Director level on international Joint Ventures. In 1984 he decided to start up on his own and came to London where he established Foresight Limited. His business grew on the back of a shuttle service management for export of crude oil and the purchase of multipurpose ships which traded internationally. By 1990 he had ushered the Company into offshore drilling and reefer shipping which formed the backbone of Foresight during the next two decades. Tankers and multipurpose ships were added to the fleet, and managed from Cyprus. Since 1994 he has been a member of Lloyds Register of Shipping Committee. He is on the committees of DNV UK and American Bureau of Shipping. In recognition of his services to the shipping industry, he was awarded, in 2006, an Honorary CBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Chris has been with the firm for over 28 years. He chairs the India practice and spends one or two weeks a month in India with clients and contacts.

He regularly speaks at conferences on cross-border deals involving India including at the All India Management Association, the Commonwealth Business Forum and the Vibrant Gujarat Summit. Chris leads the programme of events with the National Law Schools in India which includes an annual lecture series with the Dean of the Oxford Law Faculty.

Chris is also the joint Italian relationship partner for the firm and he recently spent six years as the graduate recruitment partner.

Chris was formerly based in Hong Kong and Singapore, where he was managing partner for South-East Asia.

Dr. Mohan Kaul

Dr Mohan Kaul is currently Chairman of the Commonwealth Business Council and Executive Chairman of the Commonwealth Inclusive Growth. Dr Kaul was appointed Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth Business Council (CBC) on its establishment by the Commonwealth Heads of Government in Edinburgh in October 1997, a position he held until 31st March 2012. He is also Chairman of Commonwealth Inclusive Growth Services (India) Limited and member of the Board of Glodyne Ltd. He is also a member of the Board of the Crown Agents Foundation, Advisory Board of British Expertise and Board of Governors Ahmedabad University, India.  Dr. Kaul is currently a member of the Presidential Advisory Councils of Mozambique, Uganda and Zambia.  In the past he has served on similar councils in other countries.

Prior to his appointment to the CBC, Dr Kaul served as a Director and senior member of the Commonwealth Secretariat; United Nations adviser; Professor and Dean at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad.  While at IIM, he was Advisor to the various Departments of the Government of India, including the Planning Commission, Electronics Commission, Department of Foreign Trade.  He was also a member on a number of boards and consultant to many leading public and private sector firms including shipping Corporation of India, L&T, DCM & Electronic Corporation of India. 

He has led International advisory and consultancy assignments in over 40 countries which includes assisting the South African government of President Mandela on public service reforms, advising the Prime Minister’s department of the Malaysian government, advisor to various Governments a member of the UN Secretary-General’s Management Efficiency Group, leading a delegation to China for discussions with President Hu Jintao on governance and globalisation and conducted the first evaluation of the Grameen Bank Bangladesh. He also addressed a special session of the UN Assembly on public management.

He has held other positions including member of the Board of the World bank’s Africa Virtual University;  Board of Directors of the UK-India Business Council,  Central Council of the Royal Over-Seas League, and is a Liveryman of the City of London. He is also a member of the Board of the Commonwealth Network for Information Technology for Development, Malta.

He has a PhD in Management Science from the University of Paris-Sorbonne. He is author of a number of publications.  He was also conferred the honorary Doctorate of Letters by Cape Breton University Canada in November 2007. He is a fellow of UK charted Institute of Personnel Development, Fellow of International Institute of Training & Development, USA and Fellow of Computer Society of India.  He was also President of the International Association of Schools and Institutions of Administration.

Hugh Matheson Morgan AC, was the CEO of Western Mining Corporation. Hugh is known for his advocacy of the nuclear industry and skepticism about global warming. Hugh was a Director of Alcoa, appointed to the board of the Reserve Bank of Australia, and Chair of BioDiem. As Chair of the International Council on Metals and the Environment (later ICMM), he helped launch the Global Mining Initiative. He served on the boards of IDFC, a leading financial services company, and Apollo Hospitals, the leading healthcare services business in India. He also managed the Khazanah healthcare portfolio, ranging from hospitals to health insurance providers, that was consolidated under IHH Healthcare and listed in Singapore for a USD 7 billion valuation.

Previously, Michael led the USD 250 million global custom manufacturing business for the Piramal Healthcare Group, focusing on global acquisitions, business development, supply chain management and talent. Prior to that, Michael was a partner and spent 12 years with McKinsey & Co. He focused on healthcare and consumer sectors across South and Southeast Asia, and also worked out of the firm’s offices in the UK, Singapore, Israel and South Africa.

Miss Penny Low has traversed more than 60 countries. She is honoured as a founding member of the Forum of Young Global Leaders (2005) and New Asian Leaders (2004) by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF) and an official link between the YGL and the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs. In 2007, Penny was honoured as a Yale World Fellow and a Yale Scholar by Yale University, USA. She recently completed the Global Leadership and Public Policy for 21st Century Leaders at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

In 2001, Penny was the youngest elected female Member of Parliament in Singapore. She chaired the Government Parliamentary Committees (GPC) for Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts, and currently serves on the GPC for Ministry of Finance, Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of Education.

Penny has extensive experience in the wealth management industry, having founded the Planners-Hub Consultancy in 1998 and several related technology-based enterprises. She served on the Global Voice Editorial Advisory Board of Financial Planning Association (USA) and the ISO/TC222 Taskforce on Personal Financial Planning. She trains senior executives and has co-written syllabus for CFP, ChFC, CLU and an undergraduate module on Financial Management. She sits on the Governing Council of the Singapore Institute of Management.

In 2006, she founded Social Innovation Park Ltd, a leading non-profit organisation that spans 6 countries. S. Gopalakrishnan (Kris), along with N.R. Narayana Murthy and five others, founded Infosys in 1981. Kris served as Director (Technical) and his initial responsibilities included the management of design, development, implementation, and support of information systems for clients in the consumer products industry in the U.S.

Between 1987 and 1994, Kris served as the Vice President for Technical Operations of KSA/Infosys, a joint venture between Infosys and KSA located in Atlanta, U.S. In 1994, he returned to India and was appointed Deputy Managing Director of Infosys.

Before becoming the CEO and Managing Director in July 2007, Kris served as the company's Chief Operating Officer, President and Joint Managing Director, responsible for customer services, technology, investments, and acquisitions. Kris served as the company’s Executive Co-Chairman between August 2012 and May 2013. He has been re-designated as the Executive Vice Chairman of the company effective June 1, 2013.

He is a Trustee of the Infosys Science Foundation, a not-for-profit trust, set up by Infosys and some members of its Board, to spread the culture of science mainly through the Infosys Prize, an annual award across six scientific categories.

Recognized as a global business and technology thought leader, Kris was recently voted the top CEO (IT Services category) in Institutional Investor’s inaugural ranking of Asia’s Top Executives and selected as one of the winners of the 2nd Asian Corporate Director Recognition Awards by Corporate Governance Asia in 2011. He was also selected to Thinkers 50, an elite list of global business thinkers compiled by Des Dearlove and Stuart Crainer, in association with the IE Business School, Madrid and the London Business School's Management Innovation Lab in 2009.

In January 2011, the Government of India awarded Kris the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third highest civilian honor. He has also represented Infosys and the country in international forums such as: The Indo-US CEO Council; President’s Council of New York Academy of Sciences; and Member of UNESCO High-Level panel on Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equity. Kris was also the Chairman of The Business Action for Sustainable Development 2012 (BASD), a coalition of international business groups committed to sustainable development.

In April 2012, Kris was appointed as a member of the reconstituted United Nations Global Compact Board for three years. The Global Compact Board is the UN’s highest level advisory body, involving business, civil society, labor and employers organizations. He is also a member of the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) International Advisory Board and Fudan University School of Management International Advisory Board. Both CEIBS and Fudan University School of Management are prestigious business schools in China and the Asia region.

Kris is the President of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) National Council and on the Board of Governors at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore. He is also the Chairman of Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management (IIITM), Kerala and International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bangalore. He is a member of ACM, IEEE and IEEE Computer Society.

Kris holds master's degrees in Physics and Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.

Sev Vettivetpillai is a member of The Abraaj Group’s Executive and Investment Committees and has 20 years of direct private equity investing experience. He previously held the positions of Chief Executive Officer of Aureos Advisers Ltd and Chief Investment Officer for the Aureos Group, where he was instrumental in implementing the Aureos investment philosophy and strategy of investing in small and medium-sized companies across global emerging markets.

Prior to joining Aureos, Mr Vettivetpillai was a Senior Investment Executive at CDC Group plc. Mr Vettivetpillai’s other appointments were at Vanik Incorporation (Sri Lanka) as a Portfolio Manager and Mott Macdonald Group (UK) as an Engineer.

Mr Vettivetpillai holds the designation of Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a BEng. (Hons) in Civil Engineering from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine.

Simon F. Cooper is president & managing director for Asia Pacific for Marriott International.  Mr. Cooper will be responsible for leading the operating performance and growth of the region which includes more than 130 properties and 70 hotels under development represented by The Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, Marriott, Renaissance, Courtyard and Marriott Executive Apartments brands.


Prior to this position, Mr. Cooper was president for The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company.  Under his  leadership, the company earned the highest accolades. The Luxury Institute has named it the “Most Prestigious Luxury Brand” in their survey since 2005.  In 2007, 2008 and 2010, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company won #1 ranking in the J. D Power and Associates North America Hotel Guests Satisfaction Index Survey.  In 2009 People Metrics named Ritz-Carlton the #1 global luxury brand in terms of engaging its guests.  In 2009 Ritz-Carlton won the World Saver Award from CondeNast for their Community Footprints program.
Mr. Cooper was originally with Marriott International where he served for three years as president of Marriott Lodging Canada and senior vice president of Marriott Lodging International responsible for Canada and New England.


In 2005, he was elected to the Board of Directors of First Horizon National Corporation.  In 2004, he was appointed to the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Canada Institute Advisory Board.  In 1999, Mr. Cooper was appointed as Chairman of the Board of Governors for the University of Guelph for a three-year term (No. 1 Comprehensive University in Canada, Macleans 99/02.)  He still serves on the Board of the School of Management and Economics.  In 2010 he received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws from the university. The degree was awarded to Mr. Cooper in recognition of his “leadership and contributions to society and to the university.”
Born and educated in England, Mr. Cooper earned an MBA from the University of Toronto.

Sir Thomas Harris

Sir Thomas Harris has been Vice Chairman of Standard Chartered Capital Markets Ltd since 2004. Standard Chartered Bank has a history of over 150 years in banking and operates in many of the world's fastest-growing markets with an extensive global network in over 75 countries.

He is a non-executive director of Johnson Mathey, the SC First Bank (Korea), and Biocompatibles plc. He is Chairman of the Pakistan Britain Trade and Investment Forum, the Taiwan British Business Council and the Trade Policy Panel of the British Bankers Association. He also serves as a Director of Asia House and the UK India Business Council.

He previously served in the British Diplomatic Service where he was the UK's Director General for Trade and Investment in the USA and British Consul General in New York from 1999 to 2004. He has also served overseas in Tokyo, Washington DC, Lagos, Nigeria and Korea where he was British Ambassador from 1993 to 1997.

In London he held various appointments in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Cabinet Office and the Department of Trade and Industry where between 1997 and 1999 he was Director General for Export Promotion, responsible for the UK overseas trade promotion programmes.

Sudhir Narang

Sudhir Narang is Managing Director for BT’s India operations since December 2007, based in New Delhi. He is responsible for all Business Operations of the BT Global Services, BT’s India strategy, as well as promoting the company’s presence and services in the Indian sub-continent including outsourcing and captive operation centre.  He was recently elevated to handle sales across Asia pacific/Japan region. He is also a core committee member of British Business Group.

Sudhir was member of Board of Directors of Accel Frontline for three years between 2008 and 2011. Prior to joining BT, Sudhir was CEO of Tulip IT services, a data telecom service provider and IT solutions company. He has also held various leadership positions, including senior vice president, India and SAARC, at Cisco Systems India Pvt Ltd. At Cisco where he spent close to a decade, Sudhir worked with business verticals comprising enterprise, IT/ITES, Public Sector and Service Providers. He generated tremendous growth in these areas and helped to build a world-class team to execute on various projects. 

Before joining Cisco, Sudhir held the position of general manager at HCL Comnet, the networking line of business for HCL. Sudhir has over 24 years’ experience in the Indian IT/Telco sector, with a strong grounding in all aspects of business operation sales & business development, customer delivery & service.

Sudhir holds an engineering degree from BITS, Pilani and has also pursued a post- diploma in international business. Sudhir also holds Post-Diploma in International Business. An avid reader, he finds spending time with family and friends, a great stress buster.

Peter Chamley leads Arup’s Infrastructure work in the UK, Middle East and Africa and is Chair of the firm’s Global Infrastructure Practice. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over 35 years’ experience in Infrastructure and major civil engineering projects worldwide. He has worked on projects in UK, Europe, Australasia, East Asia and the USA.

Most recently, based in London, Peter has been leading the design of over 40km of TBM bored tunnels below the capital city for the Crossrail project. Other recent projects have included Chief Engineer for the design of the Second Avenue Subway in New York, USA, and leading the contractor’s design activities for the No. 7 Line Extension, also in New York.

Jayendra Naidoo

Executive Chairman, J&J Group

Jayendra Naidoo is the co-founder of the J&J Group and Executive Chairman.

Between 1981 and 1994 Jayendra was a Trade Union leader, serving as the national Negotiations Co-ordinator for the Congress of SA Trade Unions (“COSATU”) between 1992 and 1994.  He led the ANC Alliance team in 1991 in negotiating the National Peace Accord the forerunner of the country’s constitutional negotiating process.

He was a leading member of the various multi-party peace initiatives that COSATU was involved in, such as the Natal Joint Working Committee in 1985, the National Peace Committee in 1991 and the National Peace Secretariat in 1992. As COSATU Negotiations Co-ordinator he was responsible for the establishment of the National Economic Forum (“NEF”) in 1992, the country’s first-ever tripartite forum for socio economic matters.

Between 1995 and 1998 Jayendra became the first Executive Director of the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC). He participated in several governments’ related initiatives, including the selection panel appointed by President Mandela to shortlist members to serve on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Since 2000, he has been the CEO of the J&J Group.

Communicating and collaborating with different leading international organizations and delivered sessions in APEC Conference, Malaysia and SBBN conference, Dubai.

Recently attended the TCI conference in Denmark, Global Economic Summit in India and interacted with world leaders on the development of clusters.

Recently made joint programs with three leading MSME organizations of India i.e. NSIC, SIDBI & IamSME of India with cooperation of High commission of India in Bangladesh.

Taking joint initiatives with CIRDAP to share SME experiences and promote SME within CIRDAP countries.

Brian is responsible for major projects in China, Hong Kong, Philippines, USA, Greece, many other European countries and of course Sri Lanka. Brian is a trained Engineer and one of the best known experts in steel projects of all kinds.
