Background

Various governments have approached CBC from  time to time for assistance with commodity trading – either buying or selling. CBC promotes the open exchange of commodities at a fair value with as little intermediation as practicable.

Scope

CBC is working to bring sales to Commonwealth sellers or buyers in a range of commodities globally.  Currently these are limited to precious metals, coal and refined oil products, but we have had  requests for other metals and grains.  CBC does not take a view on price  in any of these transactions but merely facilitates the sales.  In some cases, this involves creating a larger single order from smaller traders or governments, and facilitating the delivery of that larger order (which results in lower delivery costs to the buyers).  In other cases, our banking member companies provide trade finance to facilitate the transaction.

Exchanges

CBC considers that electronic exchanges can offer an efficient method of concluding a transaction for many commodities and is working to facilitate such commodity exchanges for a number of its member companies in Commonwealth countries.
